What is Life Coaching?

Life Coaching is a process that helps you to get what you want from your life, and to become the person you want to be.

Life Coaching helps people live the life they want, the way they want to have it, by helping with a number of areas:

  • Getting Clarity about what you want, and aligning what you say you want with the inner values that influence your feelings in each moment
  • Altering attitudes and challenging beliefs that hold you back from your desires because negative attitudes and limiting beliefs lead to behaviours and actions that are not helpful for you
  • Chunking down the 'big picture' of your life's dream into Goals that can be individually understood and that you can 'go for', by creating actions plans and carrying them out, a step at a time. (Success by the inch is a synch, success by the yard is hard...)
  • Helping you to get better at the skills and capabilities that will help you get what you want
  • Helping you to improve your communication and relationship skills so that you can build positive relationships with people that matter to you and avoid difficulties with people who may oppose or compete with you
  • Helping you to measure your progress as you go along, look at what is getting in the way of progress and helping you to deal with and overcome difficulties or blocks along the way

If you watched a Life Coach and someone being coached (the person being coached is called the 'coachee'), most of the time you would simply see two people engrossed in conversation. You might notice that one person was doing more talking than the other.

Life Coaching helps you to decide what you want, and how to make the changes that may be necessary to get you there.

How Does Life Coaching Work?

Life Coaching a very special relationship between you and your coach. Your coach does not judge you or tell you what to do. Rather, your coach asks questions that assist you to think it ways that are helpful to you and expand your options. Sometimes we know what we want but we don't know how to get there. A good coach will help you to decide on your course of action in ways that work for you and your life circumstances.

What will I actually do when I am being coached?

If you want a more detailed insight into coaching from the point of view of being coached, it may help you to read the page for coaches about the attitudes, skills and capabilities they need to develop to become good coaches.

You will meet with your coach on a schedule you have agreed, but probably fairly regularly, and you will engage with your coach in a dialogue focussed on you and your desires. Coaching sessions can be intense and demanding, and require focus and commitment. Coaching not only will help you with a single issue or goal, it will bring you to new levels of awareness in many areas and contexts.

In general, Life Coaching focuses on 3 main areas:
  1. Goals. What do you want? Where do you want to get to?
  2. Action Plan - How are you going to get there? What steps will you take to get what you want?
  3. Overcoming Limitations. What stops you or holds you back? Working out ways of removing blocks and overcoming limitations and working through situations that hold you back.
You are likely to have tasks and project work to do by yourself or with others in between coaching sessions, or your coaching may highlight other areas of personal discovery, reading and study, workshops and training courses that you want to do.

Whatever happens, if you have a good coach, and you put in the effort, in my experience you will definitely benefit from Life Coaching.
